In his article, “Embracing Adversity- How to Handle Difficult Situations in Life’, John Miles states: “In all its complexity and beauty, life is an intricate tapestry woven from threads of joy and sorrow, success and failure, love and loss.” In these uncertain times, we seem to wake up daily to a new crisis – economic uncertainty, political drama, social turmoil, natural disaster. The anxiety and sadness are at times overwhelming. Yet each of us has to balance the empathy or dismay we feel towards others while juggling our own personal challenges. How do we process theirs and ours when it all matters and still find peace and happiness?
Making it through tough times requires persistence and endurance. Begin by identifying what you can’t change and make adjustments to those that you can. In doing so, you may realize that some things perceived as bad, have a positive side to them as well. By sorting the problem into smaller sections, you will see there are aspects that you have control over. Being grateful for the little things may lead you to understand they were the foundation for something much greater.
Your emotions are your gauge indicating what’s important to you, so acknowledge them. They help you to establish boundaries between the acceptable and that which is not. In doing so, you will begin to filter the negative connections out of your life and nourish those who genuinely care about you. Likewise, when you give help to another, you help yourself.
Adverse events are unfortunate but they will not last forever. Perhaps they are necessary for us to mature emotionally and spiritually and are thus part of the human experience. It takes time to be strong and to move on. In the interim, practice self-care and look for activities that give your life purpose and satisfaction. Nelson Mandela, who endured years of imprisonment for his beliefs said: “The greatest glory of living lies not in never falling but in rising every time you fall.” The human spirit is remarkably resilient. Adversity unearths strength and courage you never knew you possessed.
